This paper examines the linguistic structure, historical evolution, and cultural semantics of plant names (phytonyms) in the English language. Phytonymy serves as a rich repository of human history, reflecting changes in language, migration, colonial expansion, scientific progress, and folkloric beliefs. By analyzing the etymology, morphological compounding, and semantic motivation behind English plant names, this study demonstrates how vernacular nomenclature bridges the gap between scientific categorization and human cognitive experience. Additionally, the paper discusses the historical tension between Linnaean binomial nomenclature and folk taxonomies, highlighting how vernacular names preserve archaic metaphorical worldviews that formal taxonomy often discards.
